Mark it on your calendar.  There is no need to RSVP.

It is great that the Iowa DOT is working to make safety and traffic flow improvements to facilities in Washington.

How did we get the IDOT to address this difficult and busy intersection of State Highways?

  • Back in 2000, WEDG worked with the City in a request that the Iowa DOT conduct a TEAP study (Traffic Engineering Assistance Program) on the Hwy 1 corridor from the junction with Hwy 92 south to the city limits.  The IDOT did this study and had some local meetings and outlined some possible solutions and cost estimates.  The City was unfortunately unable to begin funding this project because the Legislature eliminated a longstanding state program called "Payments to Cities and Counties" right about the same time.  The loss of this funding at the time made the City's ability to cost share improvements with either the IDOT or property owners infeasible.
  • In the late 1990s and into this decade, the IDOT had planned several "Super 2" highway improvements for roads such as Hwy 1 from Washington to Iowa City, and from Iowa City to Mt. Vernon (Hwy 30).  These "Super 2" roads were an alternative to 4-lane improvements (including bypasses) that the IDOT had been building in other parts of the state.  In the early 2000s, the IDOT dropped all "Super 2" projects from their plans, but continued to look at problem areas along this extended Hwy 1 corridor.
  • Local businesses and the City have recently been more active in requesting that the IDOT address improvements to Hwy 1 and 92 in the City.  The IDOT did a patching job on Hwy 92 last year, and they have told the City Council that they are planning a more substantial improvement project on Hwy 92 and Hwy 1 through Washington and north to G-36, including the south junction of Hwy 1 and 92 on the west side.
